Nkhotakota Safari Lodge

This piece of paradise is situated on its own secluded sandy beach 12 Kms South of Nkhotakota Port on the Shores of Lake Malawi.

The lodge has been built between the mature indigenous trees and all chalets are right on the beach with stunning lake views. It is a small friendly lodge with four traditional thatched rondavels and 3 spacious deluxe chalets. All the chalets have mains electricity, screened windows, ensuite bathrooms, mini bars, fans, electric mosquito killers, mosquito nets and large airy “Khondes” (verandas) overlooking the lake. Two of the three deluxe chalets have upstairs balconies with outdoor baths where guests can relax under the trees and stars, or sit and admire the view with the cooling breeze from the lake. The lodge has good mobile phone network, also suitable for internet access, and a back-up generator.

Beside the lake is the newly built bar and restaurant. The bar is very well stocked including fine South African & French wines. The restaurant is one of the best along the lake shore with an ever changing international menu designed by our head chef. The 2 TV screens are discreetly curtained but at guests’ request full satellite TV can be obtained for world news and sport. All matches for the 2010 World Cup will be available.

Rose, manages the lodge and is always pleased to attend to any special requests from guests. Moses, our experienced barman, will assist you with your perfect sundowners as well as keep you up to date with anything you wish to know about Nkhotakota or Malawi. There is a book mart with guide books & maps & Malawian literature as well as a “buy and return” section for good holiday reading - the funds from which help support a local primary school.

The Lodge is the ideal place to stay while seeing the many attractions of Nkhotakota, which has been called “the largest village in Africa”. Nyasa Safaris will be able to arrange for a wide variety of day trips from the lodge. You will still be able to see things “as they used to be”; visit villages where tourism has not yet impacted; see traditional dances performed the way they have been for generations and to tour the locations surrounding Nkhotakota Town where the relics and stories of the Slave Trade and Livingstone’s attempts to stop it are still very much alive. You can meet the descendants of those chiefs that both the slave traders and Livingstone negotiated with. Boat trips, kayaks and sailing boats are all available.

Nkhotakota Pottery is just 10 minutes walk along the beach and there visitors can not only see an excellent range of hand crafted pottery and wood carvings, but they can also make their own pots or decorate pots already made. Visitors are welcome to spend a few hours, a few days, or a few weeks at the pottery. The pottery has its own packing and dispatch service so your pottery can be shipped to any destination in the world, fully insured.

45 minutes drive away from Nkhotakota Safari Lodge you can be in the heart of Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve, one of the worlds last untouched wildernesses There are almost no passable roads in this pristine bush of miombo woodland so Safaris are on foot with our Tour Guide and an experienced and armed Game Ranger. There are some spectacular views of the rapids on the Bua River and possibilities to see a wide variety of game including crocodiles, elephants, lion, zebra, buffalo and many types of buck.

Our Full Board Rate includes English breakfast, midday meal or picnic lunch & a 3 course dinner in the evening. We are also happy to quote for accommodation only or bed and breakfast.
